Only the top layer of the skin is gently burned to allow Kambo enter directly into the Lymphatic System which is the key system to purifying the body.

The number of points/burns/gates used depends on the number of times that the person has already received Kambo, the reason for the application, physical condition, and overall assessment by the practitioner based on their knowledge. The minimum amount of gates is 3 and maximum is 9 for the first session.

The Origins of Kambo

There are many legends from many tribes. The origins of Kambo trace back to the indigenous tribes of the Amazon rainforest, particularly among the Katukina, Kaxinawá, and Matsés tribes of Brazil and Peru.
The legend surrounding Kambo is deeply spiritual, often passed down through generations as a sacred story of healing and discovery.
As the legend goes, a shaman named Kampu from one of these tribes noticed his people suffering from an outbreak of illness. After trying all his usual remedies without success, Kampu retreated into the forest and communed with the spirits, seeking guidance to heal his people. During a profound vision quest, he was visited by a spirit who revealed a cure to him in the form of a green tree frog, the Phyllomedusa bicolor, or “Giant Monkey Frog.” The spirit showed Kampu how to respectfully gather the frog's secretion and apply it to small burns on the skin, allowing its potent medicine to enter the body.

When Kampu returned to his people and used the frog’s secretion, his community experienced remarkable healing, gaining strength and vitality that lasted long after the ceremony. From that point on, this medicine became known as Kambo in his honor, symbolizing purity, healing, and strength.

Over time, Kambo became an integral part of the Amazonian tribes’ spiritual and physical practices. The secretion was not only used for physical ailments but also for clearing negative energy, boosting mental clarity, and enhancing spiritual awareness.

Warriors would often take Kambo before hunting or battle, as it was believed to sharpen the senses, increase stamina, and clear away doubt and fear.

Today, Kambo is respected as a traditional medicine and continues to be valued for its detoxifying effects, immune-boosting properties, and ability to release emotional blockages. Though used across the world now, its deep connection to the Amazon rainforest and the wisdom of indigenous shamans remains at the heart of Kambo's journey.
